The Advantages of LED Lights
With incandescent light bulbs due to be phased out within the next few years, many people are turning to LED lights, also known as light emitting diode lights, as a replacement. Although LED’s are initially more expensive than traditional light bulbs, this cost will be more than offset when you consider that the average lifespan of an LED light can be as much as 100,000 hours. That works out to eleven years of continuous operation! The inherent long life and reduced maintenance costs are leading to LED’s being used outside of the home as well, in such applications as road signs and traffic signals.
Another significant cost savings is realized when you consider that LED’s operate at 80% efficiency, as opposed to 20% for an incandescent bulb. That makes them environmentally friendly as well, due to the decreased power consumption.
But perhaps the biggest factor making them eco-friendly is that LED lights do not contain mercury. This makes LED’s a much better choice as a replacement than fluorescent bulbs, which do contain toxic levels of mercury that can lead to serious health issues in the case of breakage. Fluorescent bulbs also have complicated recycling procedures. And LED’s are available as replacements for fluorescent “tube” type bulbs as well.
You may have already seen LED strip lighting in use, as they are becoming commonplace for decorative holiday lighting. The flexibility (no pun intended) of LED strip lighting makes it an ideal choice for numerous applications.
LED light bars are another example of how you have seen this technology put to use, as they are commonplace for such applications as the flashing lights you see on emergency vehicles.
So when you consider that LED lighting will last much longer, is more versatile. requires less maintenance, and is more environmentally friendly due to their energy efficiency, and the fact they do not contain any toxic elements, the choice for you lighting needs is clear.
